Synopsis
On a class trip gone wrong, more than 250 students and chaperones from a high school in Ansan City lost their lives in the sinking of the MV (merchant vessel) Sewol. Byung-ho, a grieving father who lost his daughter Kyung-eun, suffers from memory loss. As the vice president of the MV Sewol Family Coalition, he has had various conflicts with the other members, and after a run-in with the police, he is facing expulsion. He wanders around the wharf in the Jindo area near where the ferry sank. A fisherman, a dry fish shop owner, a volunteer who tends trees in the memorial forest, a policeman, and other passersby recognize him. Some are happy to see him, others are afraid of him. Some try to comfort him, while others try to use him for their own gain. As Byung-ho travels north to Mokpo, shards of his memory return to him, piecing together the passage of time in those ten years.
Director's Note
The MV Sewol currently sits in a port in Mokpo, but is scheduled to be moved for repairs or demolition. With many scenes set inside the ferry, this film offers the last opportunity for family members and outsiders to experience the space where so much horror happened and so much healing can happen. Sewol means the flow of time in Korean. 10 years have passed since the tragedy, and time will continue to flow into the future. This film serves as a brief pause in that flow of time to remember the lives that went down with the MV Sewol.
